The glowing fence

Future optimism is latent behind the fence

Like any ambitious Saudi citizen, I had opportunities throughout my professional career which truly enriched my experiences and were related to my ambition for building my homeland to be the best among all countries.

Few weeks ago, I received a kind invitation from the Investigation Department in Najran to inform me that I had been chosen to be a part of delegation, which includes prominent figures from various sectors of Najran region, whose primary goal is to exchange experiences between regions. Such invitation had a special impact on me. At first, I was amazed and shocked that shortly turned into a strong sense of pride and delight at being chosen to represent the Najran region's education sector. Moreover, the ideas and imaginations of what I would do on this trip blew me away! What might I see? could anyone enter this area? Is it allowed to be there? and are women allowed to attend such events?. At that time, a clear connection between the education sector, which serves as the primary institution for developing intellects, disseminating intellectual awareness, and exporting all positive national goals, and the other state sectors with their various responsibilities and objectives came to mind. But everyone's ultimate objective is to have a secure home and educated citizens.

On December 27th , we set out for the magnificent Abha in the context of Najran history and civilization. The representatives of Investigation and State Security from Najran and Asir welcomed us in the hotel's courtyard. The conversation's tenderness has a unique sparkle. On Thursday morning, the delegation visited the prison.

A day before, questions are aroused again about the visit; would we make an actual field visit or would it be a merely presentation and a condensed explanation? would it be allowed to intervene, ask questions, or engage in dialogue? In the moring, we set out on time. I watched many documentaries about prisons over the world, so as we drove, I was thinking of jails "would they be similar to what I had previously imagined?" would I witness such traumatic events on the ground!? but my deep belief that my country possesses humanity, justice, and preserving dignity, which match and exceed everything that might appear, under a wise leadership that is well aware that the citizen is the hump of this dear nation.

The first destination was the "Advisory Department". One of the staff members, who is in charge of the prisoner's psychological and social care, discussed what would work best for him and what he needed, the most prominent and difficult goal at the same time is to build bonds of trust between the inmates and the employees. The achievement of such goal stems from the inmates awareness of the size of the services provided from a safe place, appropriate meals, and various aspects of preserving his dignity.

Then, we went to the hospital. As I walked into the hospital ward of the prison with the visiting delegation, I had a mixture of wonder and pride.  I noticed that all services are offered including physiotherapy sessions, health monitoring, minor surgeries, eye and dental care, and other top-notch services delivered by eminent medical staff. We continued seeing a package of social, cultural, and sporting services, as well as everything else which might come to mind in terms of professions and businesses to ensure an optimal time investment. What made this tour interesting, the warm reception of the administrators of these services. In addition, they accompanied us to explain the provided services which enhanced the feeling of transparency, objectivity, and honesty of this tour.

After that, we moved to sketching and craft rooms, where the visitors' very precise and expert works are displayed, then to montage and transmission rooms, and from there to the computer room and office work. The administrators gave us a rundown of their work and production in those rooms. What stopped me was an integrated artwork that had been shown on a computer, together with the preparation, montage, proofreading, and translation by one of the representatives. He was speaking in both Arabic and English about King Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud, the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Next, we went to the public library, which was divided into three parts according to the kinds of books. We learned how to categorize and arrange the books and volumes within the prison library from the inmates who were in charge. As we walked, we heard the national anthem of our country so we headed to find out its source. We arrive at the music room to see inmates who were playing musical instruments and singing patriotic songs, and their looks filled with love and pride. Contrary to what may be depicted in mindswhich is far from the truth that I touched with sincerityis noticeable in the excitement that covers their speech, the smile that rises over their faces, and the satisfaction that is touched by the language of their bodies. Moreover, their talk about what they accomplished in the prison corridors and their great feelings towards Saudi Arabia "We are the sons of this country, we love it and appreciate everything it has to offer, and we are like others make mistakes and we have learned from that mistake" affected us greatly.

Finally, in private, we discussed how beautiful the integrated services that we experienced, from the private bedrooms and the services they containedwhere even the smallest details were consideredto the training facilities and the provision of a variety of programs. While discussion, I saw a ray of sunshine enlightening the hallways. With hasty steps shrouded in curiosity, I went to the source of the light, to find a vast backyard in which the inmates could spend their time whenever they liked.

The most prominent question in my mind is, where is the womens section?

The answer is provided when a group of inmates were at our reception to show us women section. Similarly to what we saw in the men section, we also saw it in the women section. However, it is impressive that they do not disregard the various special needs of women, as evidenced by the makeup and hair salon and the training workshops it contains for the various skills of this profession, which are presented to the inmates to a hall for designing clothes and accessories, in which they participated. Some of the visitors to an exhibition in Riyadh chose a selection of their original works to be shown there.

As though we were strolling through the halls of a vocational school and training facility, our eyes dart between the objects in the corners, the artwork, and the many works produced by the prisoners. The children's nursery hall, which is furnished and intended for children who follow inmates up until the age of two, generously displayed the smallest details while yet displaying the cloak of kindness and affection.

The farthest thing that could come to my mind before the visit was the availability of an English language program. Thats so I chatted with two girls who were responsible for providing this service. I expressed my positive feelings towards their great work. They told me that they learned it on their own within the prison using the available books and programs so they had decided to share their knowledge of English language to the other female coworkers.

At the end of our joyful tour, they offered us Saudi coffee and various food items that they prepared for the guests in their own kitchen. Moreover, they gave us bouquets. we had no choice but to shake hands with our sincere prayers that their imprisonment period ends, and they return to their families and their external community as loyal individuals to this country, complete the path of education, work and development that they started, like the rest of the members of society.

Our fortunate visit came to a successful conclusion with a singular experience that entirely changed the stereotypes about prisons that had been presented to us and made us fully aware of the excellent reformative and service roles offered. It is nice to feel that you are the subject of concern in your homeland. You have all your rights that preserve your dignity without categorization or discrimination. Moreover, you are aware of what your duties towards your homeland, serving it and defending it as a first security man. At the same time, in the midst of frequent attacks from the envious, we are becoming more and more united for the sake of our homeland. A homeland with an expansive vision which reaches the sky, where people are fully aware that it is a blessing that millions of people long for and that its advancement is guaranteed for us, our offspring, and their offspring after us.

My kingdom is lofty and disobedient to every hater.
